The growth of interconnected devices is having a huge impact in the lighting industry and is leading the rise of the so-called Smart Buildings.
Recently, a drastic shift in the relationship between buildings and people inhabiting them every day has been happening. The main driving forces towards innovation are the costs reduction and the possibility to make buildings more efficient, even though the well-being and comfort of the people inhabiting them are factors taken into increasingly more consideration.
Speaking of lighting, the new technologies play a key role in the aforementioned evolution, and lead the growth of Smart Lighting buildings.
The integration of connected lighting devices is already an integral part of building planning. This is where Bluetooth mesh networks thrive. This kind of wireless network creates a distributed platform and a conversation grid that other services inside the building might use, paving the way for a wide range of possibilities.
Thanks to a system that makes use of connected devices, like for example a mesh network, the buildings will not only be able to automatically control the lighting levels, but also to regulate the temperature and to control the various assets, saving a lot of resources with economical and environmental advantages.
WHAT DOES MESH MEAN
Bluetooth® Low Energy (LE) is based on a many-to-many (m:m) type of communication between devices called mesh. It can also be used on a large scale and it’s perfect for building automation, sensor networks and resource tracking solutions. Only Bluetooth mesh networks guarantee a common and global interoperability, thanks also to the reliability of Bluetooth technology, unparalleled in the industrial field.
From the regulation of internal temperature, whether it’s heating or cooling, to security, a Bluetooth mesh network enhances houses and office spaces, making them smarter. How? By allowing dozens, hundreds, even thousands of wireless devices to intercommunicate efficiently and safely.
WIRELESS SENSOR NETWORKS
The Wireless Sensor Networks market (WSN) is expanding rapidly. This is especially true for industrial wireless sensor networks (IWSNs), because the industries themselves work on the improvement of the networks in term of efficiency and costs. The Bluetooth mesh network is no less, since it’s been designed to satisfy the strict requirements of reliability, scalability and security of the IWSNs.
BLUETOOTH MARKET TREND
Bluetooth has emerged as one of the main players in the market, also due to the fact that it’s an essential technology in the integration between lighting and network construction services, being able to fully exploit the potential for energy savings in smart buildings.
At this year’s Light + Building, the attendees had the chance to observe for the very first time how the Bluetooth technology is improving the lighting and the smart building services, with a multitude of new Bluetooth mesh products recently launched on the market.
The role of Jackie in the IoT system
Jackie IoT (Internet of Things) is our table and wall lamp, which mounts a Bluetooth sensor and a temperature and brightness sensor. These data are entered into a mesh network, where these products keep relaying information and sharing them with one another in order to perform actions.
