Via Veneto 89
INA’s historic headquarters, the imposing building inaugurated in 1927 in Via Veneto in Rome, is one of the earliest examples of office buildings in Italy. Studio Scandurra’s redevelopment project, which respects the constraints imposed by the Superintendency, starts with a study of architect Carlo Broggi’s original drawings in order to adapt the historical spaces to the needs of contemporary work environments. The intervention aims to restore clarity and simplicity to the interior layout, removing the additions that have accumulated over time and restoring the central courtyard, the beating heart of the original project.
A key element of this transformation is the strategic use of light. The rearrangement of the spaces, with the repositioning of the cores and fixtures facing the courtyard, has improved the visual and physical permeability of the building. A transparent, walkable skylight above the main lobby not only allows plenty of natural light to filter in, but also creates a direct connection between the spaces on the upper floor, making light the protagonist of a unique spatial experience. Light thus becomes a common thread linking the rooms, enhancing the architectural proportions and giving a sense of openness and continuity between the historic and modern spaces.
The collaboration between Studio Scandurra and Panzeri has resulted in a series of custom-designed lighting fixtures specifically designed to enhance the historic building and its interiors: a modern interpretation of the classical forms of the Doric column and its grooves, which are transformed into light, while at the same time taking on a decorative and architectural value. The strongly expressive sign of the luminous columns and their majestic presence scan the spaces and embellish the openings and entrances, through and outdoor wall and indoor floor-to-ceiling versions. Customisation work has also involved standard products such as Golden Ring and Hilow Line, which have been custom-designed to characterise the space and adapt to the proportions of the environments for which they are intended.
